Judge Eric J. Markovich, 15 lawyers
Observers: 30 plus observers
19 people were on the list including 1 woman. 9 had been picked up near Lukeville, 5 near Sasabe, 3 near Nogales and 1 each near Naco and Meningers. Most people were picked up during the last week but 2 had been apprehended on March 1. 5 people were wearing disposable shirts which was more than usual.
A Honduran, Daniel Levia-Bonilla—21794M brought up Credible Fear. I could not hear the discussion between him, the lawyer (Ore-Giron) and the judge well, but it seems he was not asked and did not understand what he should do. It would seem that any time a migrant asks for asylum or has credible fear that should stop the criminal process. This man was sentenced to 75 days which will now be on his record when he is returned to immigration for deportation.
The total days sentenced was 2,110—a large number for a small group. 6 people had 180 days and 7 more had between 75 and 150 days. At $161 dollars a day to jail prisoners, mostly in private prisons, the cost to the taxpayer is $339,710.
This was a pretty quiet day, one day out of five when OS hearings are held at Evo Deconcini Federal Court in Tucson which represents one sector out of nine sectors on the southern border of the United States.
