Why We Put Water Out in the Desertby Eric N.

Water is life! Our northern Sonoran Desert is beautiful, but it can be dangerous and life-threatening if someone is not prepared for its terrain and environment. Summer temperatures can exceed 110 degrees F. regularly and the desert in many places offers little to no shade, and no potable water sources. We Green Valley – Sahuarita Samaritans therefore try to do our part to ensure that people, be they hikers, birders, mountain bike riders, migrants or travelers, find safe drinking water in the desert. We maintain numerous sites in our borderlands along trails known to be frequented by people traveling through the desert. We regularly check them and keep them stocked with gallons of water, packages of nonperishable food, Life Straws to purify dirty water for drinking, and powdered electrolyte packages. While signs of human passage along the trails may go up and down, we firmly believe that if through our efforts we can save even one life by having safe drinking water available, it is all worth the effort.

Hand embroidered cloths, wrapping food with love and hope, were carried in backpacks, then left behind in the desert. Found rarely now, due to the commercialization of border crossing, the ones we have are dearly treasured.
