Ambos Nogales     "Both Nogales": Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora, Mexico

​Asylum Seeker       
Asylum seekers or asylees seek international protection; usually already in the United States or waiting to present their case at a Port of Entry; usually they are or will be legally recognized as refugees (see below)

Basura ​      Migrant belongings and items left behind in the desert; Spanish word for trash

​BORSTAR          Border Patrol Search, Trauma and Rescue unit

BP        Border Patrol

CBP        U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Comedor        Aid Center for Migrants in Nogales, Sonora; operated by Kino Border Initiative       
          

Deportee        A person who has been or is being expelled from a country for violation of immigration laws

​Desert Search.       GVS Samaritans search back roads and trails 3-4 times per week for 6-7 hours at a time looking for migrants in distress

DHS.      U.S. Department of Homeland Security; oversees BP, CBP and ICE 

​Eloy.       Town in Arizona with two immigrant detention centers; both have on-site immigration courts; both are operated by Core Civic, a private corporation   

​Florence        Town in Arizona with two immigrant detention centers; one has an immigration court on-site; one is operated by Core Civic; the other is owned by the federal government but staffed by a private security company 

FOB         Forward Operating Base; usually by Border Patrol

ICE.       U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement

Immigrant        A person who moves from their country of birth to another, usually seeking a permanent change
 
​Migrant.       
A person who moves from place to place, within a country or, in common usage, between countries

POE       Ports of Entry are places where people can lawfully enter the country, usually along the border, also airports or seaports

Refugee        Persons outside of their native country who are unwilling or unable to return due to persecution or well-founded fear of persecution due to a variety of factors

RHR        Recovered Human Remains

Tucson Sector        Covers most of the state of Arizona from the New Mexico state line to the Yuma, Arizona, County line, a length of 262 miles

​Water Drop        GVS Samaritans leave clean water at multiple sites along migrant trails; sites are checked and re-stocked twice per week
