Marta Bernardini shared news from the Humanitarian Corridors project in Italy. The project’s first group of migrants has arrived successfully and legally in Italy.
Mike Wilson gave a description of what Casa Alitas does. Casa Alitas, a project of Catholic Community Services in Tucson, shelters those families who have surrendered themselves at the border and are very often seeking asylum from violence in Central America. They are processed by Border Patrol/ICE, serve 1-3 days in detention and released to Casa Alitas. There, they prepare to travel to family members in the U.S. where they have an appointment to appear before immigration authorities.
Here is a summary of the February 24 Operation Streamline proceedings: 44 migrants, 2 of whom were women; 1 excused due to a language barrier; 3 were from Guatemala, 1 from Honduras, the rest from Mexico. The 43 migrants were sentenced to 3,075 days in prison for a cost to US taxpayers of $495,075.
