Once again Green Valley-Sahuarita Samaritan Laurie Jurs raised folks to their feet to applaud her 12-bar song “Blues for Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez”. This time it was performed at the GVS Samaritans' meeting on March 28, with Rev. Randy Mayer accompanying Laurie on his guitar. Her song is a moving tribute to the Nogales, Sonora youth shot and killed three years ago––through the border fence––by a Border Patrol agent who stood in Nogales, Arizona. It asks, “Where is the justice?”
Laurie’s song was written for a blues writing class at the third annual Common Ground on the Border conference in Sahuarita in mid-March. At the final evening concert, her eloquent words and delivery brought a standing ovation. The Border Patrol agent will face a federal trial on November 17, 2016. Follow this link to Laurie’s blues.
