Nothing unusual today. 75 migrants, 2 excused due to lack of interpreters, 17 first time crossers and the rest re-crossers. Six entered at ports with fraudulent documents. About ½ were from Mexico. Those who re-entered received 2615 days in mostly private prisons at a $161 cost to taxpayers per day per migrant for a total of $482,615 to US taxpayers
No requests for asylum; no medical problems; no evident lack of understanding of the legal process on the migrants’ part; no migrants spoke up nor did their lawyers.
McDonald follows up when a lawyer says his client has trouble with Spanish to assure himself that the client understands. He is respectful of the migrants and urges lawyers to speak up if they have anything to say.
After court three 1326 woman faced the magistrates to be sentenced. Unusual to separate the women from the men in court.
