Judge: Lynnette Kimmins; 15 lawyers
Federal Prosecutor: C. Lewis
About 20 observers; 4 from University of Colorado at Boulder who came through GV Sams, 12 plus from Lewis and Clark College in Portland OR and a professor from the U of A who had never been to OS. The students were all on Spring Break.
There were 16 male migrants, shackled wrists, waist and ankles.
The total sentence was 960 days. At $161 a day that comes to $154,560 mostly for the benefit of private prisons. The judge made 5 recommendations for incarceration in Arizona but the Bureau of Prisons has the final say as to where people serve their sentence.
Judge K. came to talk to us and answer questions after OS. I have been so impressed by the questions asked—some informational some existential. Some of the Portland students asked if we wanted to join them outside to process what we had witnessed. We sat for about an hour and most had something to say. One woman wondered if our presence there wasn’t condoning the practice in a way. There was wind and traffic noise and I was wishing for a good pair of extendable ears.
