Magistrate Jacqueline M. Rateau
Federal Prosecutor: Eric Markovich
Samaritans: Monti and Linda Rogers, Kathy Samson, Sara Busey
Observers: A Representative from the Mexican Consulate and Sasha Vulovit from Detroit’s Hinterland Theater
Magistrate Rateau sentenced 39 migrants in 30 minutes. Their combined prison stay of 2175 days will cost U.S. taxpayers $350,175. No one pleaded “not guilty” and no women were among them. One was excused due to language barriers. Rateau failed to say where each migrant was from so we had no idea how many were from Central America.
A pleasant chat with a young women from the Mexican Consulate. She said they had met at 12:00 with Mexican migrants and knew from information from the Border Patrol which they were. We explained the problem one migrant last week had obtaining phone numbers from his confiscated cell phone and she replied her office could not help as only migrants or their family could claim his belongings.
We exchanged handouts and information with Sasha Vulovit, an Operation Streamline (OS) observer who is here for the week gathering information about the border with plans to return to Detroit where her Hinterland Theater will produce a play about the border to tour big cities in Michigan this fall. She will go on a search with Kathy Samson tomorrow to learn more. Sasha’s father is a Serbian refugee.
